Peugeot failure ends Wurz challenge
Peugeot's third and final works car has dropped out of the Le Mans 24 Hours as Alex Wurz's charge towards second place was cut short just over two hours from the finish
The #1 car, which had lost four laps during the night with an alternator problem, had stormed back towards the front this morning in the hands of Anthony Davidson and then Wurz.
Just as Wurz moved within eight seconds of the #8 second-placed Audi of Andre Lotterer, Benoit Treluyer and Marcel Fassler, his Peugeot's engine appeared to expire at Indianapolis.
He made it back to the pits, leaving a trail of oil into the Peugeot garage, where the French mechanics confirmed that its day is done.
Peugeot Sport boss Olivier Quesnel had tears in his eyes as his final entry was retired. ORECA boss Hugues de Chaunac attempted to console Quesnel on the pit wall, while at the other end of the pitlane Audi boss Wolfgang Ullrich looked just as frustrated at being denied a battle for second in the last two hours.
Audi is now left to claim a 1-2-3, with its only remaining opposition the ORECA 908, which is 45 seconds behind Tom Kristensen's #7 car and closing continually.
