Tomczyk takes pole in Spain

Martin Tomczyk has boosted his DTM title chances by taking pole position for the penultimate round of the season at Barcelona

The German driver is the only Audi in the top six, as Mercedes had a strong session in damp conditions.

Mika Hakkinen showed a return to form by qualifying second on the grid, while Bruno Spengler, who is Mercedes' best hope for the title, will start third.

Bernd Schneider jumped up to fourth place with a late lap, while Jamie Green was pushed down to fifth after running second early in the final session.

Gary Paffett was the top driver in older machinery as he put his 2006-specification Mercedes sixth on the grid, while Timo Scheider is the second-best Audi in seventh place.

Alexandros Margaritis did well to get his '06 Mercedes into the top eight shootout as well, but he was unable to trouble those ahead of him in the final session.

Championship leader Mattias Ekstrom had a poor session, and the Swede will start 10th on the grid for the second consecutive race.
