Petter Solberg stays in rallycross for 2014 world championship

Petter Solberg will stay in rallycross for the new world series in 2014 rather than chasing a return to rallying or switching to circuit racing

Petter Solberg stays in rallycross for 2014 world championship

The 2003 World Rally champion returned to his rallycross roots this season when competitive WRC opportunities dried up.

Solberg announced his 2014 decision in an exclusive column for AUTOSPORT.

Solberg: why rallycross is my future

"For me, the most important thing is always to be fighting at the front and trying to win the championship, and that is why I decided on rallycross again for 2014," Solberg wrote.

"Of course, there were other options on the table as well, some in circuit racing too. But what I want to do is to be going for championships with a proper programme, and rallycross allows me to do that."

The Norwegian only finished eighth in this year's European Rallycross standings after a problematic year.

He is confident that with a full winter of preparation he will fare better in the 2014 world championship, and said he was not looking at what was going on in the WRC, despite the return of Hyundai potentially opening up more opportunities.

"I'm focused on doing my own thing and going where my road takes me," Solberg wrote.

"I've got a car with 600 horsepower, the best guys in the world in my team, and I get to meet some amazing fans.

"There's a lot to look forward to, the best period of rallycross is still to come."
