Hour 17: Lammers spins but survives
Jan Lammers escaped a high-speed spin in his Racing for Holland Dome-Judd, and continues to run in fifth place in the Le Mans 24 Hours.
The Dutchman lost control of his Dome under braking and pirouetted several times before coming to rest in a gravel trap. Despite damage to his rear wheel Lammers was able to crawl back to the pits where Andy Wallace took over and continued to run at a strong pace.
The incident should have allowed the chasing #11 Panoz to close right up, but at almost the same moment Gunnar Jeannette locked up and went straight on into the barriers at Arnage. Although able to continue, an opportunity to make up ground was lost.
Problems continued for the Luc Alphand Ferrari 550 Maranello. After the machine's earlier steering problems, owner/driver Alphand then stuck the car in the gravel, necessitating another stop and dropping the car to fifth in class.
The race order continues to be largely static elsewhere, except inevitably for the GT class, where the Alex Job Racing machine is back ahead of its Orbit Racing challenger.
Anthony Davidson's crash that ended the race for the #80 Veloqx Prodrive Ferrari was caused by a wheel-bearing failure. The Briton has received a brain-scan in hospital, but is believed to be unhurt.
