Canada's Wickens wins Durban sprint

Rob Wickens claimed Canada's first ever A1GP sprint race win in a chaotic outing in Durban

The teenager made a solid start from pole, but was able to establish a big early lead after New Zealand's Jonny Reid tagged GB's Oliver Jarvis at the first corner, forcing the chasing pack to stamp hard on the brakes.

Jarvis gave chase, but his mirrors were full of Neel Jani's Team Switzerland car, and Wickens stretched his lead past five seconds. But this was all reduced to nought after Bruno Junqueira launched his Brazil car over the kerbs at the chicane and into the wall.

The race restarted with just two laps to go, but Wickens made a textbook restart.

Any hopes of a last lap showdown vanished after Michael Ammermuller's Germany car tagged the back of Holland's Jeroen Bleekemolen on the entry to the fast final right-hander. Both cars spun, and even though Bleekemolen somehow missed the wall, the red flag was thrown.

Jarvis took second, with Jani third and Franky Cheng taking an excellent fourth for Team China.

Bleekemolen and Ammermuller were classified fifth and sixth, ahead of Australia's John Martin.

Filipe Albuquerque finished a great eighth on his debut for Portugal, followed by David Garza (Mexico) and Fairuz Fauzy (Malaysia).
