Williams may extend Button test

Jenson Button's bid for a drive with the Williams Formula 1 team may be extended into Sunday

The 19-year-old British F3 racer looks likely to carry on testing unless he manages to complete his session with Williams on Saturday.

Button's test did not get off to a good start this morning.

After arriving at a wet track, Williams was beset by problems.

Button completed just one lap before the gearbox on the Williams-BMW broke.

Then team suffered a hydraulic problem, before the engine gave out later on in the day.

F3000 racer Bruno Junqueira did not get a run in the car at all.

Button is scheduled to run again on Saturday afternoon, while Junqueira is pencilled in for the morning.

Meanwhile, Jaguar driver Eddie Irvine has been quickest of the day, followed by McLaren driver David Coulthard.

Jaguar test driver Luciano Burti is also present at the session.

Ricardo Zonta is at Jerez to get his first taste of this year's British American Racing challenger, which will be powered by Honda.

McLaren test driver Olivier Panis has put in a number of laps during Friday.

Sauber driver Pedro Diniz had an off during the afternoon, but the car was undamaged and he returned to the track later on.
