Fernando Alonso given green light for rest of Chinese GP weekend

Fernando Alonso has been cleared to race for the remainder of the Formula 1 weekend in China

A violent crash in his McLaren in the season-opening Australian Grand Prix last month, gave Alonso a fractured rib that ruled him out of the subsequent grand prix in Bahrain.

Following further medical tests in Shanghai on Thursday, the double world champion was initially given dispensation to compete in first practice only, pending further investigations immediately afterwards.

After completing 12 laps in his McLaren in an FP1 session disrupted by two red flags for incidents involving Felipe Massa in his Williams and Kevin Magnussen for Renault, Alonso returned to the circuit medical centre.

Following another quick series of tests, Alonso has been given the all clear.

"As a result of a medical examination undertaken following free practice one, the FIA F1 medical delegate, Prof Jean-Claude Piette, and the chief medical officer of the Chinese Grand Prix, Prof Shiyi Chen, have ruled that Fernando Alonso is fit to take part in all remaining sessions this weekend," said the FIA in a statement.

"However, as with this morning's session, in case of any abnormal symptoms the driver has been informed that he must stop his car immediately.

"As the driver has been cleared to take part, no further medical checks will be undertaken unless the driver presents any abnormal symptom."
