Best qualifying of the season for Hill

Damon Hill put in a 24-carat performance to start his final British Grand Prix sixth - his highest grid position of the season

While doubt surrounds his future, the ex-champion delighted in a better handling car to set a lap time just a tenth of a second behind team-mate Heinz-Harald Frentzen, winner of the last grand prix in France a fortnight ago.

'I'm pleased to be in the top six but it doesn't mean anything in respect of career decisions. All it means is that we are in a good position for the race, and in with a very good shout of a podium position,' he said.

'I have found a few little things that have made a big difference to me feeling confident with the car.

'I know it could be emotional day tomorrow if I let it, but I've got a job to do and emotions won't occupy my mind at all.'

In the euphoria he was pressed again on whether he would continue after Sunday, but he refused to be drawn.

'I said in my press release I would do what is right for Eddie and the team.'

Under further questioning he only repeated three times, ' I said I will do what it right - that's it.'
