Belgian Leinders to Test for Jordan

Belgian driver Bas Leinders will test for the Jordan-Ford team in the Silverstone-based squad's first test session of 2004 in Barcelona next week.

Belgian driver Bas Leinders will test for the Jordan-Ford team in the Silverstone-based squad's first test session of 2004 in Barcelona next week.

The 28-year-old, who in 2003 competed in the Nissan World Series finishing in third position, will get his first outing in a Formula One car on January 21st, the second day of Jordan's four-day test session.

"I'm very happy that Jordan have given me the opportunity to do my first Formula One test," said Bas Leinders. "I, along with all Belgians, am looking forward to this. Hopefully we can do a good job and see what the future brings."

Jordan said they will shortly announce drivers for the remaining days of the test. A team spokeswoman said Leinders was just one of "many candidates" being looked at for the role of test driver for the team.

"I'm pleased to give Bas Leinders this opportunity in F1," said team principal Eddie Jordan. "He has proved himself to be a talented and persistent driver in the junior categories and this chance is well deserved.

"I'm delighted to see the Belgian Grand Prix return to the calendar - we have great memories associated with the track at Spa-Francorchamps, where we scored our historic 1-2 maiden victory - and it would be great if there was a Belgian driver participating as well."

Jordan are the only F1 team yet to announce their driver line-up for the 2004 season.
