Hakkinen still on top
Mika Hakkinen continued to set the pace in the first of the two Saturday morning practice sessions at the Nurburgring
The Finn was over 0.7s faster than title rival Eddie Irvine, and a full second quicker than his team-mate David Coulthard. Both the championship contenders may have been sandbagging however, with Irvine spending most of the session on an old set of tyres and Hakkinen aborting some late fast laps.
Several drivers went off during the session. Coulthard, Giancarlo Fisichella, Olivier Panis and Pedro Diniz all made harmless trips across the gravel.
