Tomczyk: wins not necessary for title
DTM championship leader Martin Tomczyk has said that he does not need to win races this year to take the title
The championship has been wide open so far this season as several of the older cars have been competitive, and Tomczyk currently leads the standings despite not having won any of the first four races.
"If I can win the championship without any victories I would still be happy," Tomczyk told autosport.com. "It's a nice feeling at the time, but I don't need it."
Tomczyk is now in his sixth year of the DTM, and the 25-year-old believes that he is now mature enough to be more patient in races.
"You have to think about the championship points," he added. "I think I'm old enough and mature enough now that I can do that in a race."
The German added that his race at Brands Hatch was a demonstration of his new approach, as he drove consistently to second place, and decided against a desperate move for the lead on Bernd Schneider.
"Eight points is better than none," he said. "At one point I thought I could pass Bernd because I was much faster than him, but I stayed in second place, which gave me the lead in the championship, and less ballast for Norisring."
Tomczyk currently leads his Audi teammate Mattias Ekstrom by two points in the standings, ahead of the fifth round of the season at the Norisring this weekend.
