Whincup grabs tight race two pole

Team Vodafone's Jamie Whincup won a close battle to secure pole for race two of the L&H 500 at Phillip Island

Whincup took pole in the closing minutes of the session, bumping Jeld-Wen's James Courtney off the top spot, who had just taken the position from HRT's Garth Tander who set an early time and looked like taking a comfortable pole until Whincup and Courtney's late efforts.

Still less than a tenth behind Whincup was Will Davison in the Jim Beam Racing Falcon, with Russell Ingall completing the top five in his Supercheap Commodore.

Jason Richards, Steven Richards (in the car sitting on the race one pole), Paul Radisich, Shane van Gisbergen and Luke Youlden complete the top ten which was more representative of regular season order than the first session.

However the second HRT car was down the order again, Glenn Seton 18th fastest, while the overseas visitors also had a hard time, with Fabrizio Giovanardi 23rd in the sister car to the pole car, and Boris Said making it a pair of 28th starting positions for the second Supercheap car.

With teams choosing which of today's two races to make a compulsory pit stop in and the regular season runners spread across both races, there is potential for a large shuffling of the order in both races.

After today's two races are completed, the points each car has earned over the two races will be combined to determine the starting order for Sunday's 500 km race.
