Winterbottom on pole for race one
Ford Performance Racing's Mark Winterbottom has taken pole position for race one of the L&H 500 at Phillip Island
Winterbottom was almost three-tenths faster than Team Vodafone's Craig Lowndes, who was followed by a few surprises, Britek's Jason Bright, Glenfords' Fabian Coulthard and Steve Owen for Dick Johnson Racing, the top five places filled by Fords.
Behind them were a couple of the regular Holden frontrunners in HSV Dealer Team's Rick Kelly and Holden Racing Team's Mark Skaife, with Steven Johnson, Greg Murphy and Lee Holdsworth rounding out the top ten.
Further down the order than expected was the second Holden Racing Team car with Craig Baird at the wheel in 16th, two places ahead of David Besnard in the Jeld-Wen Motorsport Falcon.
The visiting internationals struggled for speed, Matthew Halliday in 21st, Marc Hynes in the second team Vodafone car in 26th and Matt Neal 28th and last in the Supercheap Auto Commodore.
