Bright leads FPR 1-2 in race one
Ford Performance Racing scored a one-two finish as fellow Ford runner Craig Lowndes suffered a horror result in race one of the Ferodo Tasmania Challenge at Symmons Plains Raceway
Ford Performance Racing' Jason Bright looked set to take the runner-up position on the podium until late-race engine dramas for Garth Tander allowed Bright to sweep past on lap 37 of 42.
Bright's teammate Mark Winterbottom produced a fast but clean drive to finish second, with Rick Kelly taking the final podium position. Tander finished the race in fourth, just ahead of James Courtney.
However, among this good news was a nightmare result for Triple Eight. Heading down the hairpin on lap one, contact between Jamie Whincup and Jack Daniel's Racing's Paul Dumbrell sent Whincup hard into the fence, Greg Murphy slamming into the fence as he tried to avoid Whincup's car. Both cars were out on the spot.
As bad as this was, the worse news was that Craig Lowndes was also involved and had damage to his car. By the time Lowndes returned to the track, he was two laps down, and finished the race in 27th place.
Having gone into the round with a 30 point lead over Rick Kelly, he now trails him by 50 points and will start race two tomorrow 24 places behind him.
Pole sitter Mark Skaife's troubled season continued, hounded Tander in the early laps until a problem with the left rear tyre at his pit stop forced Skaife to pit again, eventually finishing in 16th place.
