Tander takes race two

Toll HSV Dealer Team's Garth Tander took a narrow win in changing conditions in race two of the Ferodo Tasmania Challenge at Symmons Plains Raceway

Jason Bright led the race on a wet track before making his pit stop, Tander taking over the lead before Bright retook the place in a daring move after both drivers had switched from wet to slick tyres as the track dried.

But just two laps later Bright had a moment coming into turn six and speared off the track, handing the lead back to Tander as he dropped to third place behind teammate Mark Winterbottom. Despite two safety car periods late in the race the top three remained unchanged.

Just behind them was Todd Kelly and his brother Rick, who consolidated his championship standing despite a wild ride in the closing laps which almost cost him a number of positions as a trackside sign became lodged in his front spoiler, blocking the air intake.

Some smart thinking saw him pull up behind a lapped car which moved it around, before later breaking up and falling off.

After yesterday's dramas, a fighting drive by Craig Lowndes saw him move up from 27th at the start of the race to ninth at the end, losing just a few points to Rick Kelly in the process.

Another driver looked set for a similar charge up the order, Mark Skaife moving up from 16th to sixth before a high-speed off in the closing laps saw him finish the race in the garage.

After yesterday's carnage at the start of race one, the cars of Jamie Whincup and Greg Murphy were so badly damaged that both cars were withdrawn by the teams from the rest of the weekend.
