Hayden happier after test progress

World champion Nicky Hayden believes that his troubled preparation for the 2007 season took a significant step forward in testing at Jerez on Saturday

The American had crashed twice at the previous test in Qatar, and then struggled in Friday's damp conditions.

He had also been hampered by the relatively small fairing on Honda's new RC212V, which Hayden believed put him at a disadvantage on the straights.

But despite ending the second day of Jerez testing only 11th on the timesheets, Hayden felt that he had made a breakthrough.

"We made a lot of improvements today and, even though we had fog this morning, when it cleared up we still got in a pretty full day," he said.

"I know we're still quite a long way from the top of the timesheets and our position doesn't look stellar but I was a lot closer today.

"We made a good amount of progress and I think I'm a lot better off than it looks because I stayed on race tyres - I didn't try a qualifier.

"I enjoyed riding my bike today and working with the team - and that's important."
