Grapevine: Criville turns TV pundit
Former 500cc world champion Alex Criville will turn his MotoGP attentions in 2007 to TV commentary, in the booth in a predominantly new line-up for Spanish station TVE
Criville, world champion in 1999, has been back in the paddock in the last twelve months assisting fellow Catalan Toni Elias in the Fortuna Honda team, working as an advisor. His help culminated with Elias' first MotoGP win in a thrilling Estoril race last October.
Coverage of MotoGP in Spain has just had a new deal sealed with TVE for some years after negotiations with other channels, including Telecinco - who show the F1 and World Superbike championship.
Thirteen-time champion Angel Nieto remains as a pitlane pundit for the channel too, whilst Criville replaces former 250 world champion and successful team boss Sito Pons up in the booth.
Criville is still mobbed wherever he goes in Spain after being the first and only Spaniard to wrap up the 500cc title back in 1999 aboard a Repsol Honda NSR500, even though Spaniards have won countless world titles in 80cc, 125cc, 250cc and 350cc classes.
The Catalan retired from the sport following a mysterious illness at the start of the 2002 season.
