125cc: Faubel on provisional pole in Italy
Hector Faubel made the most of a downpour at the start of qualifying for the 125cc MotoGP race at Mugello to grab provisional pole position on Friday
Under threatening skies and with the track slightly damp, the riders were well aware that the best conditions would be right at the start of the session and they all rushed out for a single lap before the rain became heavier and made track conditions worse.
It was Faubel who got it spot on with his best lap of 2:15.309, just seven tenths of a second clear of Mike di Meglio, with championship leader Lukas Pesek third quickest. Gabor Talmacsi was fourth fastest.
Despite the difficult conditions, several riders decided to complete more laps to perfect their set-ups - amid the threat of rain for the rest of the weekend.
Federico Sandi was the only rider to get it wrong on the wet track after taking a tumble, although he was able to get back on the bike and return to action.
Mattia Pasini, who has been on pole position for the last four races, missed out due to the poor weather and could manage no better than 16th, one place behind Briton Bradley Smith.
