Daytona 24 Hours winner Ricky Taylor tests Pagenaud/Penske Indycar

The Cadillac driver swapped his Daytona Prototype for the Dallara single-seater as a reward from engine supplier Chevrolet for his form in American sportscar racing in recent seasons.

Taylor had tuition from Pagenaud during the test, with two other Penske drivers - Juan Pablo Montoya and Helio Castroneves - in attendance.

Despite light rain interrupting the session Taylor, who said his last experience of a single-seater came "seven or eight" years ago, was happy with the experience.

"To get to know all the guys and get to drive the car and get an actual feel for it in a low-pressure environment is a great opportunity for me," he said.

"Even if it doesn't lead to anything, it's a big learning opportunity.

"It's a very different car to adjust to. There are a lot of different signals the car is sending me.

"The total amount of downforce this car creates is unbelievable. That combined with how well it brakes and no traction control and no driver aids and no power steering, it's very different from what I'm used to."

Pagenaud set up the car before Taylor drove and praised the American's approach to the test.

"Ricky's definitely shown that he deserves to drive Indycars," said Pagenaud. "When you get the call to test for Team Penske, it's really cool.

"It's a big honour for him and for us. He's a super-nice guy and he's been taking it all in."

Penske competition director Kyle Moyer revealed the test had been in the pipeline for "about a year".

Moyer did not rule out the team facilitating another test for Taylor in the future, while Taylor said this initial test "can't hurt" his chances of getting another run.

"Every driver dreams to be an IndyCar driver," said Taylor.

"It can't hurt to be involved with [Penske]; there are no negatives to that."
