Weekend review and result round-up
It had been on the cards since he opened up a big points lead during the summer, but with third place in race one at Imola, Andy Soucek officially became the first champion of Formula 2's modern era. He then put the icing on that cake by taking victory on Sunday
Bertrand Baguette was the other man to clinch a title this weekend, putting the Formula Renault 3.5 crown beyond his rivals' reach at the Nurburgring.
Nico Hulkenberg and Daniel Ricciardo had wrapped up GP2 and British Formula 3 a week ago, and each started their season finale weekend with a crushing victory, before things went awry for them in their second races. It was Luca Filippi who emerged on top of a chaotic GP2 sprint race in Portugal, while Ricciardo's poor start in race two at Brands Hatch opened the door for his Carlin team-mate Max Chilton.
The IndyCar Series championship will not be decided until Homestead next month - Ryan Briscoe having squandered his points lead with a pitlane crash in Japan that allowed race winner Scott Dixon and his Ganassi team-mate Dario Franchitti to set up a three-way showdown in Florida.
The British Touring Car Championship remains open too, but Colin Turkington is looking well-placed having come out best from a typically wild day at Rockingham.
NASCAR's elongated championship showdown is only just getting underway, and it is Mark Martin who has the early advantage after denying Juan Pablo Montoya a first oval win in a tense shoot-out at Loudon.
