Race: Simmons dominates
With pole winner Mark Taylor sidelined because of illness, Jeff Simmons had things all to himself in the Infiniti Pro Series race at Kentucky Speedway
Simmons led from start to finish in the Kentucky 100, leading Cory Witherill across the finish line by 0.1119 seconds. Thiago Medeiros was third, Arie Luyendyk Jr. fourth and Ed Carpenter fifth.
Briton Taylor, the series points leader, was treated for severe dehydration Friday night, then withdrew from the event on Saturday when the condition persisted. In spite of the DNS, Taylor continues to lead the Infiniti Pro Series standings by 56 points over Simmons.
"We have had such a good year that I can afford this," Taylor said. "I was just not feeling well enough, not 100 percent. We don't know what it is, food poisoning perhaps. I was just not feeling well enough to go race."
Simmons moved up to the No. 1 starting position and led all 67 laps for his second consecutive Infiniti Pro Series win. He won for the first time in his career last weekend at Gateway International Raceway.
"When Mark Taylor was not able to start, I was able to control the pace and actually got a bit of a gap," Simmons said. "We're just going to keep working and keep fighting. Obviously, the momentum is on our side now."
The race was marred by a crash that sent Tom Wood to University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington with injuries to his feet and ankles. IRL medical officials reported that Wood was awake and alert and listed in stable condition.
