Williams F1 junior Lance Stroll takes double F3 pole position
Williams Formula 1 protege Lance Stroll scored a double pole position in the second qualifying session of the Formula 3 European Championship round at Zandvoort
Prema Powerteam's championship leader was one of 16 of the 20 drivers who emulated Hitech's strategy from the first session in going out from the beginning of the session, and then pitting midway through for new tyres.
UPDATE: Stroll loses both poles to exclusion
The Canadian made it work, with three laps in his Dallara-Mercedes that were quicker than the best anyone else could manage, allowing him to finish 0.129 seconds clear of Callum Ilott.
"The first set of tyres was a bit of a waste - the track was quite green for some reason," said Stroll.
"But I felt much more grip on the second set - it felt consistent, and I was able to deliver a good job."
Ilott continued his run of good form with Van Amersfoort Racing to qualify on the front row for race two, but his second-best lap was good enough only for ninth for race three.
Prema's first-race polesitter Nick Cassidy bemoaned messing up his best three laps as he took third fastest, and fourth on the grid for race three.
Red Bull junior Sergio Sette Camara and the Motopark squad turned things around from first qualifying - the Brazilian said the amount of grip surprised the team, but he gave credit to the engineers for improving the car as he took fourth fastest overall, and a front-row start for race three.
Maximilian Gunther, who like team-mate Cassidy was one of just four drivers who used only one set of tyres, took fifth on the grid for race two but improves to third for race three.
VAR's Anthoine Hubert was sixth fastest, but only 13th on second-best times, while Mucke Motorsport's 16-year-old David Beckmann - another to use one set - will line up seventh and fifth.
The top 10 for race two is completed by Ralf Aron (Prema), Alessio Lorandi (Carlin) and George Russell (Hitech), with this trio 10th, sixth and seventh respectively for race three.
Motopark driver Joel Eriksson breaks into eighth place for race three, moving up from 11th for race two.
