Williams F1 junior Lance Stroll loses Zandvoort F3 pole positions

Williams Formula 1 protege Lance Stroll has lost his two pole positions for the Formula 3 European championship round at Zandvoort after his car was found to have a suspension irregularity

Stroll topped second qualifying and also set the fastest second-best time, giving him pole for races two and three, but his Prema Powerteam car was found to contravene article 10.3.3 of the FIA's F3 technical regulations.

These state: "The overall cross-sections of each member of every suspension component (with any nonstructural shroud for wheel tethers included) must have an aspect ratio no greater than 3.5:1 and be symmetrical about its major axis.

"All suspension components may however have sections with an aspect ratio greater than 3.5:1, and be non-symmetrical, provided these are adjacent to their inner and outer attachments and form no more than 25% of the total distance between the attachments of the relevant member.

"All measurements will be made perpendicular to a line drawn between the inner and outer attachments of the relevant member."

The stewards' verdict into the scrutineering findings read: "Suspension members aspect ratio more than 3.5:1."

Prema has renounced its right to appeal the decision, and championship leader Stroll will start both races from the rear of the grid.

It does not affect his grid position for race one, for which he qualified third.

Team manager Rene Rosin said: "We fitted Lance's car with a new component used for the first time here in Zandvoort, for the front suspension but the usual measurement check was not conducted.

"It was an error that made no difference to the car's performance but a crucial mistake that eventually led to his disqualification. We accept responsibility for the error."

Red Bull junior Sergio Sette Camara, who was due to start alongside Stroll on the front row for race three, has also been excluded from the same session because of an airbox contravention.

The stewards held that the "intake system was not capable of sustaining a vacuum of 0.2 bar".

Sette Camara's team Motopark has also stated that it will not appeal.

The post-scrutineering decisions move Callum Ilott onto pole position for race two, with first-race poleman Nick Cassidy alongside him.

For the second race, Maximilian Gunther moves onto pole with Cassidy completing a hat-trick of front-row slots.
