Zandvoort European F3: Nick Cassidy takes first pole in series
Nick Cassidy swept to pole position for the first race of the Formula 3 European Championship round at Zandvoort
The New Zealander, for whom this is the first Euro F3 pole, completed three laps at the end of the session all within the same tenth to end up 0.224 seconds clear of the sister Prema Powerteam Dallara-Mercedes of Maximilian Gunther.
Surprisingly, Cassidy had never driven at Zandvoort before free practice, where he played himself into the Dutch circuit.
Expectation that the tyres would be good for only one lap proved to be overstated, Cassidy saying: "The tyres were falling away a little bit, but I was just finding new stuff.
"Unbelievable - I had so much confidence.
"The pace was there in the races at the Norisring [where Cassidy was scuppered last time out by gearbox failure in qualifying], but to have a session with nothing go wrong is amazing - it feels like a year since that happened!"
Gunther reckoned he lost a little time going too hot into the penultimate corner on his quickest lap, but was happy with his front-row slot.
George Russell was third fastest, the Hitech GP team electing to send its cars out from the beginning of the session and then pit midway through for new left-side Hankooks.
Russell was pleased with the strategy of using six tyres - against the usual F3 wisdom of taking just one set in a qualifying session - but a grid penalty carried over from the Norisring will relegate him to eighth on the grid.
That moves championship leader and free practice pacesetter Lance Stroll up to third on the grid, the Prema-run Canadian having set his times relatively early and looked good for pole until the late improvements bumped him.
Callum Ilott was fifth with Van Amersfoort Racing while a last-lap effort moved Carlin's Alessio Lorandi up to sixth, the duo promoted to fourth and fifth with Russell's penalty.
The Motopark team looked strong in free practice but Red Bull junior Niko Kari was the best of the German squad's quartet in qualifying, taking seventh (sixth on the grid).
David Beckmann led the Mucke Motorsport challenge in eighth, but he and team-mate Mikkel Jensen will each take three-place grid penalties for their intra-team Norisring crash.
That moves VAR's Anthoine Hubert up from ninth in qualifying to seventh on the grid.
Tenth and 11th fastest were Ryan Tveter (Carlin) and Motopark's Toro Rosso Formula 1 tester Sergio Sette Camara, so they will complete the top 10 on the grid.
Ben Barnicoat failed to get out at all - leaking brake fluid was discovered after he had toured from the assembly area to the pitlane before the session.
