Williams wants car to do the talking

The Williams team are staying cautious about their chances for the 2007 season following a disappointing year, although team boss Frank Williams sees the future with optimism

"I think we should say we are looking for a better future than last year," Williams told reporters during the launch of the new car.

"We would rather understate than overstate. We want the car to do the talking."

Williams launched their new Toyota-powered FW29 car on Friday with the ambition of bouncing back from their worst season in Formula One.

The British squad failed to reach the podium in 2006 and scored just 11 points on their way to eighth position in the constructors' championship.

Co-owner Patrick Head admitted both him and team boss Williams were "ashamed" of their performance in last year's championship, and while they are optimistic of bouncing back in 2007, the Briton is not talking up their chances.

"I think we are deliberatley being cautious on talking up expectations or this year, it happened a bit last year," said Head. "The car is a very good step on where we were last year. There has been a lot of weight-saving particularly at rear of car.

"We are encouraged by what we see in the wind tunnel with the full-size model. I think we have an optimisitic view we can go forward for what was a terrible season.

"Frank and I were ashamed of it but when it happens you pick yourself up and come out fighting. That is what we are going to do."

Williams said returning to the podium was one of the clear goals for the season.

"Our ambitions are clear. We have targets to achieve and we have equipment and manpower to achieve that," he added.
