It may have been another victory for Sebastian Vettel, but there was little predictable or tedious about the Malaysian Grand Prix, as the new rules and technical tricks came into their own in a race featuring plenty of intrigue and overtaking

There was controversy too, thanks to the collision between Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton, and subsequent penalties, and a surprise in the form of another Renault podium, this time with Nick Heidfeld.

With the 2011 package still very novel, most of the build-up was dominated by speculation over exactly how the rapidly-degrading Pirellis, DRS and KERS would affect the race, and whether Red Bull would even be able to run the latter.

But while some focused on what Red Bull wasn't using, its rivals were looking closely at what it definitely did have, and planning their own versions of Red Bull's wing set-up.

Most of the non-Formula 1 action came from America this weekend, with dominant wins in IndyCar at Barber for Will Power and NASCAR at Texas for Matt Kenseth. While road course victories are a matter of routine for Power these days, Kenseth's result ended a losing streak dating back to 2009.

Elsewhere, the GT1 World Championship continued at Zolder, where the All-Inkl Lamborghini of Marc Basseng and Markus Winkelhock triumphed in both races.
