Villeneuve: We are Not Competitive Enough

Canadian Jacques Villeneuve claimed his British American Racing team were not as competitive as they should have been during today's practice for the Italian Grand Prix.

Canadian Jacques Villeneuve claimed his British American Racing team were not as competitive as they should have been during today's practice for the Italian Grand Prix.

The Brackley-based squad's driver finished down in 12th position, nearly 2.5 seconds off the quickest time, after suffering from a hydraulic leak that lost him valuable time during the morning session. Villeneuve claimed there was still work to do before tomorrow's qualifying.

"We made some progress during the two sessions but we're not as competitive as we should be," said the Canadian driver. "We got some good runs in though and tried some different things and in the end we managed to get the car quite well-balanced once we'd put some laps on the tyres.

"Obviously we have some work to do yet so we'll try to do what we can to improve the car for the race."

Teammate Olivier Panis wound up 16th quickest following a trouble-free day for the Honda engines powering the BAR 004 after a very troubled Belgian Grand Prix for the Japanese manufacturer, who lost five engines in three days.

"It's difficult to judge where we stand after today," said Panis. "We have addressed some minor problems on the first session but now we have to work more on the set-up."
