Stewards issue edict to teams on blocking

Formula One teams have been told that they must take more responsibility for warning drivers about the approach of other cars during qualifying, after the latest round of complaints about blocking in qualifying

Jarno Trulli was left furious that Giancarlo Fisichella had blocked him during the third period of qualifying, and Trulli's Toyota team complained to the race stewards.

Although the stewards decided that no action was necessary, the fact that Fisichella was given no warning by his Renault team about the imminent arrival of Trulli - who had closed four seconds in on Fisichella over one lap - has led to an edict to all the teams on the grid.

A statement issued by the race stewards on Sunday morning said: "It is the Stewards' belief that teams in all probability have information available to them as to the position of other cars on the track during a qualifying session, the proximity of those cars to their own team cars and the rate of closing between competing cars on the track.

"With this information, teams should ensure that their drivers are aware so far as practicable of the approach of other cars such that they give them right of way when appropriate to do so."
