Extra race at grands prix for young drivers among Formula 1 ideas

An extra race for young drivers or a Saturday sprint race are among Formula 1's grand prix weekend revamp proposals, AUTOSPORT has learned

Extra race at grands prix for young drivers among Formula 1 ideas

Following this week's Strategy Group meeting, the FIA said changes to the race weekend format described as "exciting and innovative" are being reviewed by itself and commercial rights holder.

Among the proposals to be assessed for feasibility by the FIA and Formula One Management are a shorter race on Saturday alongside qualifying with the main grand prix still featuring on the Sunday.

Another option would be to have an additional race for young drivers, with all the teams fielding one driver in a third car and the top performers allowed to contest Sunday's main race.

The latter idea would require teams to bring a third chassis to races and thus inevitably increase costs.

The proposals will be analysed over the coming months before being taken back to the Strategy Group, which is expected to meet again in September.

As part of a raft of other regulation changes discussed on Wednesday, the FIA said it will review elements of the current engine formula, including race fuel allowance.

AUTOSPORT understands discussions are taking place regarding the cost of supplying power units and potentially enforcing a limit on horsepower to close the gap between manufacturers.
