British Grand Prix driver ratings

High praise for a man outside the top six but a low rating for one of the victory contenders - BEN ANDERSON gives his assessment of the British Grand Prix performances

6 NICO ROSBERG
Mercedes F1 W06

Start: 2nd
Finish: 2nd
Strategy: 2 stops (medium/hard/intermediate)

Rating: 8

Rosberg bounced back from gearbox problems to set the pace on Friday, and suffered again when the replacement sprung a leak before final practice on Saturday.

Hamilton had more to celebrate than Rosberg this time © LAT

He was slightly underwhelming in qualifying and, like team-mate Hamilton, had a poor start to the race, but scores well for hard battling with the Williams of Bottas and impressive decisiveness in rising to second when the rain fell. It's hard to find fault with much of what he did.

44 LEWIS HAMILTON
Mercedes F1 W06

Start: 1st
Finish: 1st
Strategy: 2 stops (medium/hard/intermediate)

Rating: 9

The world champion started slowly, spinning in first practice and generally struggling to match his team-mate on Friday. He even admitted he was "lost".

But once the team corrected a ride-height error Hamilton was back on song, and he deserves credit for converting that recovery into pole position. He gets marked down for a scrappy start to the grand prix, particularly his ham-fisted attempt to take the lead from Massa at the safety-car restart, but he was superb once the race settled down.

3 DANIEL RICCIARDO
Red Bull-Renault RB11

Start: 10th
Finish: Retired
Strategy: (medium/hard/hard/retired)

Rating: 5

Ricciardo reckoned the updated RB11 might be able to vault Williams, but in reality Red Bull had the fourth fastest car around Silverstone. A marginal track limits offence cost him dearly in qualifying and he also felt he was losing power compared to team-mate Kvyat.

Kvyat flew as conditions got worse, but he then had a costly spin © XPB

He made a bad start and loses marks for triggering the Lotus-McLaren pile-up at Village with an optimistic lunge inside Grosjean. An electrical problem finished off a frustrating weekend.

26 DANIIL KVYAT
Red Bull-Renault RB11

Start: 7th
Finish: 6th
Strategy: 2 stops (medium/hard/intermediate)

Rating: 7

Kvyat is beginning to push Ricciardo harder now. He was fast on the hard tyre, and backed the FIA to enforce the stringent track limits rules at Copse that undid his team-mate in qualifying.

He raced well for the most part, including a decisive pass on Vettel's Ferrari on the first run through Luffield, but he lost out badly with a late stop in the rain and a costly spin on his in-lap, so it was ultimately a mixed bag.

19 FELIPE MASSA
Williams-Mercedes FW37

Start: 3rd
Finish: 4th
Strategy: 2 stops (medium/hard/intermediate)

Rating: 8

Williams looked slow in practice, but the FW37 sprang to life in qualifying (to such an extent that one team wondered whether Williams was deliberately toying with its rivals) and Massa did a good job to fractionally outpace team-mate Valtteri Bottas.

Williams had a glorious period running one-two © XPB

He wasn't fast enough once he got into the lead of the race, but he drove better on the hard tyre and was much faster than Bottas in the wet at the end.

77 VALTTERI BOTTAS
Williams-Mercedes FW37

Start: 4th
Finish: 5th
Strategy: 2 stops (medium/hard/intermediate)

Rating: 6

Bottas was worried about overheating the medium tyre during practice, but things turned around to such an extent that both Williams drivers outqualified the Ferraris. He was passed too easily by Hamilton on the first lap, and later by Rosberg (but got away with it).

Getting stuck behind Massa ruined his chance of a better result had the race remained dry, but poor wet pace meant he was fortunate to finish fifth ultimately.

5 SEBASTIAN VETTEL
Ferrari SF15-T

Start: 6th
Finish: 3rd
Strategy: 2 stops (medium/hard/intermediate)

Rating: 8

The four-time champion was pretty underwhelming until the last 15 laps of the race, when the rain began to fall. Good strategy got him back ahead of Hulkenberg and Kvyat after a poor start, but he passed team-mate Raikkonen decisively as the track moistened and timed his stop for inters to perfection to vault the Williams drivers.

Vettel's podium was out of the blue © XPB

Vettel was mistake-free and very fast as he pulled off a podium finish from nowhere.

7 KIMI RAIKKONEN
Ferrari SF15-T

Start: 5th
Finish: 8th
Strategy: 3 stops (medium/hard/intermediate/intermediate)

Rating: 6

Is Raikkonen feeling the pressure? The 'Iceman' was actually on better form here than recently, on a difficult weekend for Ferrari.

He outqualified Vettel for only the second time as team-mates (the first if you discount technical problems), and was marginally better during the dry phase of the race. But he had to pit twice for inters after over-reacting to being passed by Vettel in the wet, which proved very costly.

14 FERNANDO ALONSO
McLaren-Honda MP4-30

Start: 17th
Finish: 10th
Strategy: 3 stops (medium/hard/medium/intermediate)

Rating: 8

The short-nosed MP4-30 looked a real handful here, and Alonso suffered a big gravelly moment at Luffield on Friday, but he was much happier after qualifying and beat his team-mate comfortably, despite an ERS cooling leak ruining final practice.

Button had another short British GP © LAT

He recovered well from first-lap contact with Button to score his first point for McLaren-Honda, and was impressively the only one of the earliest wet stoppers to make the flag on a single set of inters.

22 JENSON BUTTON
McLaren-Honda MP4-30

Start: 18th
Finish: Retired
Strategy: (medium/retired)

Rating: 6

Button finally got to run McLaren's latest updates, but didn't sound happy with his car's behaviour at any stage during practice and struggled to find a decent balance on the faster medium tyre.

He qualified slower than Alonso despite a smoother build-up, but his race lasted just three corners before a collision with his team-mate put him out. Arguably the most forgettable edition of a race that has rarely been kind to Button.

11 SERGIO PEREZ
Force India-Mercedes VJM08

Start: 11th
Finish: 9th
Strategy: 2 stops (medium/hard/intermediate)

Rating: 6

Perez finally got his hands on Force India's long-awaited 'B-spec' upgrade package, featuring a unique 'nostril nose', but didn't go as well with it as team-mate Hulkenberg and qualified well adrift - even allowing for the track limits offence that cost him his best lap in Q2.

© LAT

He wasn't so resilient in battle with Ferrari either in the race, and also lost time when fighting Carlos Sainz Jr's Toro Rosso later on. A solid but unspectacular effort.

27 NICO HULKENBERG
Force India-Mercedes VJM08

Start: 9th
Finish: 7th
Strategy: 2 stops (medium/hard/intermediate)

Rating: 9

Hulkenberg was right in the mix with Red Bull and Toro Rosso in qualifying in the updated VJM08, on a traditionally weak circuit for Force India.

The team said his Q2 lap was outstanding, while Hulkenberg reckoned the start that launched him up to fifth in the race was the best of his career. He lost ground at the first pitstops and waited a lap too long to pit for inters, but drove very well again.

33 MAX VERSTAPPEN
Toro Rosso-Renault STR10

Start: 13th
Finish: Retired
Strategy: (Hard/retired)

Rating: 6

Verstappen reckons the STR10 is the second best chassis in F1, and long-run pace on Friday suggested Toro Rosso could do well at Silverstone. He was very fast in practice, but a power delivery problem with the Renault engine wrecked qualifying, and Verstappen's race was over quickly when he crashed at Farm just after the restart.

Despite grand hopes for the race, Toro Rosso had a double retirement © XPB

The rookie reckoned a gust of wind and cold tyres caught him out. It was a costly mistake when points were there for the taking.

55 CARLOS SAINZ JR
Toro Rosso-Renault STR10

Start: 8th
Finish: Retired
Strategy: (medium/hard/retired)

Rating: 7

For all the excitement that surrounds Verstappen's arrival in F1, it is Sainz who has generally been the quicker of the two - qualifying ahead six times in nine races and four of the last five.

He made a poor start to the race but recovered decently enough, and was doing well to hold off Perez's Force India when the car simply shut down on him. His drive deserved points, but got none.

8 ROMAIN GROSJEAN
Lotus-Mercedes E23

Start: 12th
Finish: Retired
Strategy: (medium/retired)

Rating: 6

The E23 was difficult to drive here, even after Lotus fixed the aerodynamic failure that caused Grosjean to find the Luffield gravel on Friday. He battled oversteer on the medium tyre but even had he strung all his best sectors together he still wouldn't have made the top 10 in qualifying.

Lotus had a very short race © LAT

The unfortunate crash with the sister car of Pastor Maldonado ended Grosjean's race on lap one. A great chance to score points thus went begging.

13 PASTOR MALDONADO
Lotus-Mercedes E23

Start: 14th
Finish: Retired
Strategy: (medium/retired)

Rating: 5

Maldonado didn't enjoy the smoothest Friday, thanks to a clutch problem in first practice, and he came close to dropping out of qualifying at the first hurdle thanks to a track limits offence at Copse.

He struggled a lot with oversteer, and the fact the E23 is a bit too gentle on the harder compound tyres, but still expected to score points until he was wiped out innocently on the first lap of the race.

28 WILL STEVENS
Marussia-Ferrari MR-03B

Start: 19th
Finish: 13th
Strategy: 2 stops (medium/intermediate/intermediate)

Rating: 7

Stevens revelled in improved performance from the upgraded MR-03B, which featured updates originally designed during the 2014 season. He qualified well ahead of his team-mate, even allowing for the fact Merhi lost his best time for a track limits offence.

Stevens had a late 'off' in the wet © XPB

He started the race strongly, but lost 14 seconds in the pits switching to inters thanks to the team not being ready. He battled Merhi thereafter, until a costly 'off' on worn rubber at Luffield.

98 ROBERTO MERHI
Marussia-Ferrari MR-03B

Start: 20th
Finish: 12th
Strategy: 2 stops (medium/intermediate/intermediate)

Rating: 4

After a strong recent run this was actually a very poor weekend for Merhi until the latter stages of the race. Even without his track limits offence, he was still over half a second slower than Stevens on pure pace in qualifying.

The race was better, but he was well behind until the pitstop blunder that compromised Stevens. Manor's best result of the year doesn't disguise one of Merhi's weaker grands prix.

9 MARCUS ERICSSON
Sauber-Ferrari C34

Start: 15th
Finish: 11th
Strategy: 4 stops (medium/hard/intermediate/medium/intermediate)

Rating: 6

This circuit exposed the aerodynamic weakness of the C34, but at least Ericsson's ECU was working here. He did well to lap two tenths clear of team-mate Nasr in Q1, but disappointingly dropped time in Q2 and wound up only one place ahead on the grid.

Nasr didn't even get to race © XPB

Ericsson's race was unspectacular, but the final point was there for the taking. Changing tyres three times in six laps when the rain fell blew that chance.

12 FELIPE NASR
Sauber-Ferrari C34

Start: 16th
Finish: DNS
Strategy: N/A

Rating: 6

It's easy to forget Nasr is ahead of Perez, Maldonado and both Toro Rosso drivers in the championship, despite driving a worse car, but this was a disastrous race for the Brazilian. He blamed cold tyre blankets for a poor qualifying run, which meant the practice edge he had over Ericsson was reversed.

Nasr had no chance to redress the balance in the race, thanks to gearbox failure en route to the grid.
