Jordan Wants August Formula One Ban

Team boss Eddie Jordan said on Sunday he was the voice behind a move to ban Formula One activity in August.

He wants testing and grands prix to stop during the month in order to give everyone in the sport a rest -- a topic discussed during an FIA meeting with team chiefs in London on Wednesday.

"Formula One has become very arduous and time consuming with very high levels of stress involved in it," Jordan said during his team's 10-year anniversary celebrations at Donington Park.

"I've come up with the idea that was mentioned, not that it matters who came up with it, but I'm absolutely determined to get the rule of no testing and no racing in August through."

Jordan said he hoped the suspension would be in place at next year's championship, even though provisional calendars have already been drawn up.

He said he had the backing of other teams, all willing to extend the season to accommodate an August ban.

"I think there will be a blanket ban for August because a number of teams want to do it and it makes a lot of sense," he said. "Hopefully it will happen in 2001.

"It may mean we have to start earlier and finish later, but so be it. Otherwise we will chase a lot of high-quality personnel away into other industries.

"There are so many young and middle-aged guys in the sport who go from one season to another without a break and their kids are on holiday from school and they haven't seen their father. I think it is absolute nonsense."
