Hakkinen quickest in morning practice
Mika Hakkinen emerged quickest from the first free practice session in Melbourne Australia, as the Formula 1 cars ran in anger for the first time. As expected it was McLaren and Ferrari that set the pace
Michael Schumacher had a problem right at the end of the session, stopping on the track in the final moments.
Johnny Herbert also suffered an engine problem with his Jaguar which limited him to just five laps, while Jordan newcomer failed to complete a timed lap.
Grand Prix rookies Nick Heidfeld and Gaston Mazzacane both went off the track, while Jenson Button completed 18 laps, to finish his first official session in 14th position.
