Hakkinen quickest in Barcelona

The Finn, who was testing a McLaren for the first time since winning the drivers' title in Japan last October, completed 31 laps of the Circuit de Catalunya on Wednesday.

He put in a time of 1.22.044 to top the timesheets for that day.

Weather continued to disrupt testing at the Spanish circuit.

After snow on Tuesday, a very cold and wet track slowed teams down in the morning. However, by the afternoon, drivers were able to run on dry tyres.

McLaren test driver Olivier Panis was second fastest of the day with a 1.22.181.

Both drivers were testing 2000 development parts for this year's racecar, as well as the new Mercedes-Benz engine.

The Sauber team also continued testing at the circuit.

Pedro Diniz was third quickest [1.23.209], ahead of new team-mate Mika Salo [1.23.695].

Williams driver Jenson Button continued to outpace his 2000 team-mate, Ralf Schumacher.

The 20-year-old Brit was more than a second faster than the German in the team's 1999 specification car.

Schumacher was testing the newly-launched FW22, lapping the circuit 12 times.
