'I could have been fourth' -Villeneuve
Jacques Villeneuve produced his most competitive showing for some time in qualifying at the Nurburgring, but believed he could have done even better
The Canadian qualified eighth for BAR with a perfectly timed lap at the end of the session.
'There was a lot of traffic right at the end but my best lap was clear and the car felt very strong,' he explained.
'My first and third sectors were almost as fast as Frentzen's but I made a mistake in the second sector and backed off a little. Without that I think we could have been fourth.
'I'm very happy with the handling. The new clutch should allow me to get a good start in the race and be aggressive.'
His team-mate Ricardo Zonta struggled to find a decent set-up and will start back in 17th.
'It is a pity that our drivers are not closer together,' admitted team boss Craig Pollock. 'But reliability is one hundred percent and that is encouraging for the race.
