Free practice 3: Jordan joins McLaren at the top
After a very relaxed showing in Friday's free practice sessions, the Jordan duo of Jarno Trulli and Heinz-Harald Frentzen leapt to the sharp end of the time sheets in this mornings first free practice session, taking third and fourth without even seeming to break into a sweat
At the end of the 45-minute session, Trulli had a slight edge of 0.027s over his German team-mate, but despite moving up from their overnight positions of seventh and 10th respectively, they were still unable to hold a torch to the newly-stabilised McLaren-Mercedes pairing.
David Coulthard managed to hold onto the top spot with a fastest lap of 1m15.965s, which kept team-mate Mika Hakkinen at bay. The Finn was only 0.179s shy of Coulthard's time and will be pushing harder still during the next session and qualifying this afternoon.
Eddie Irvine raised the spirits in the Jaguar garage by putting his R1 into fifth place, just ahead of championship leader Michael Schumacher. While most drivers improved their times, Schumacher's Ferrari languished in sixth for most of the session and actually posted a time that was slower than yesterday's. Race set-up is the likely reason and Schumacher will undoubtedly be taking the fight to the McLarens this afternoon.
