Button denies Montoya signing

The 20-year-old goes into Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix intending to capitalise on what he believes is his last chance to impress team boss Frank Williams as a decision over his future approaches.

Williams has claimed he would learn at the end of the month if Montoya can be released from his contract with Chip Ganassi which was originally set to run until the end of 2001.

But Button, who arrived in Montreal on Monday to make comprehensive preparations for the crucial race, hopes a good performance may reverse Williams's decesion to give his place to the Colombian for 2001.

A strong showing at last week's Monza test has boosted Button's confidence.

"I've learned an awful lot in the last few days," he said. "We concentrated on braking, an area where I have a lot to learn and we tested with the Canada set-up for the long fast straights at Montreal.

"I can honestly say I have never felt more confident in Formula 1 and I am sure I can get a good result in Canada."

In a weekly newspaper column he added: "To those people who think they know about my future I have this message: 'It's too early to talk about Williams dropping me'.

"Just wait and see what I do in the next few races," he concluded.

Button's name has been linked with BAR, Jaguar and Jordan for 2001.
