Singapore Grand Prix driver ratings

There weren't many average performances in the Singapore GP - where a title contender, a man fighting for his future and several underdog heroes excelled while others let themselves down with mediocre weekends

6 NICO ROSBERG
Mercedes F1 W07

Start: 1st
Finish: 1st
Strategy: 2 stops (ultra-soft/soft/soft)

Rating: 10

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said this was the best he'd seen from Rosberg since joining the team in 2013, and it's difficult to disagree.

Rosberg absolutely demolished the field in qualifying, completing two laps good enough for pole. Mercedes' brake problems made the race more challenging than it needed to be, but Rosberg managed the situation well and won at the fastest speed necessary.

44 LEWIS HAMILTON
Mercedes F1 W07

Start: 3rd
Finish: 3rd
Strategy: 3 stops (ultra-soft/soft/soft/super-soft)

Rating: 6

It's not often Hamilton gets thrashed by a team-mate, but this was one such occasion. Singapore is a confidence track, and Hamilton's appeared dented as practice difficulties left him unsure over car set-up.

Hamilton was underwhelming in qualifying and the race was difficult too. He managed worse than Rosberg with overheating brakes, so got sucked into a fight with Raikkonen's Ferrari instead of challenging Ricciardo.

5 SEBASTIAN VETTEL
Ferrari SF16-H

Start: 22nd
Finish: 5th
Strategy: 2 stops (soft/ultra-soft/ultra-soft)

Rating: 8

To finish fifth after starting last was better than Vettel could have hoped for really, after his car broke at the worst possible moment in qualifying.

Starting the race on the hardest tyre proved a masterstroke. He had some trouble with Nasr's Sauber, but otherwise carved his way through the field intelligently and patiently. Though it was good result, Vettel was not as quick as Raikkonen this weekend.

7 KIMI RAIKKONEN
Ferrari SF16-H

Start: 5th
Finish: 4th
Strategy: 3 stops (ultra-soft/super-soft/soft/ultra-soft)

Rating: 9

This was arguably Raikkonen's strongest performance of the season so far. He drove very well all weekend, and put Hamilton under real pressure in the race.

The Finn deserved a podium, but was undone by Ferrari twitching at Mercedes' decision to switch Hamilton's strategy. Nevertheless, Raikkonen was faster than Vettel, and loses only one mark for overdriving in Q3 after beating both Red Bulls on his first run.

19 FELIPE MASSA
Williams-Mercedes FW38

Start: 11th
Finish: 12th
Strategy: 3 stops (ultra-soft/super-soft/ultra-soft/ultra-soft)

Rating: 5

Massa should have scored points here. He was ninth after lap one, and after the first round of stops was tracking Verstappen's Red Bull with a comfortable gap to Magnussen's Renault behind.

But Massa struggled in his second stint and couldn't recover. He got delayed behind Nasr and Gutierrez after his second stop, and stuck behind Gutierrez again after a slow third, finishing behind two slower cars. Disappointing.

77 VALTTERI BOTTAS
Williams-Mercedes FW38

Start: 10th
Finish: retired
Strategy: (ultra-soft/soft/super-soft/ultra-soft/ultra-soft/retired)

Rating: 7

Bottas did his usual good job in qualifying, but the race was a disaster. He got hit by Button on lap one, which punctured a tyre and put him to the back. That damaged the floor, which shifted the aero balance of the car and rooted the rear tyres.

He soldiered on until his seatbelts came loose, then over-revved the engine leaving the pits, so retired the car to be safe.

3 DANIEL RICCIARDO
Red Bull-Renault RB12

Start: 2nd
Finish: 2nd
Strategy: 3 stops (super-soft/super-soft/soft/super-soft)

Rating: 10

Ricciardo was brilliant in vain pursuit of Vettel in this race last year, and was brilliant again in his ultimately fruitless chase of Rosberg this season.

Set-up tweaks after practice helped extract more from the ultra-soft tyre, and he produced a stonking lap to split the Mercedes in Q3. He applied as much pressure as he could in the race, but to no avail.

33 MAX VERSTAPPEN
Red Bull-Renault RB12

Start: 4th
Finish: 6th
Strategy: 3 stops (super-soft/super-soft/super-soft/soft)

Rating: 7

Verstappen was shaded by Ricciardo this weekend. He lost his way with tyre preparation in qualifying, which was disappointing given he had looked so strong in practice - and enjoyed the small benefit of a fresh engine.

A third consecutive bad start spoiled Verstappen's race. He got stuck behind Kvyat's unsurprisingly disobliging Toro Rosso for most of it, which hindered his recovery. He cleared all the slower cars eventually at least.

11 SERGIO PEREZ
Force India-Mercedes VJM09

Start: 17th
Finish: 8th
Strategy: 2 stops (ultra-soft/soft/soft)

Rating: 8

Perez felt his steering was wonky on Friday, but traded tenths with Hulkenberg in qualifying, and was furious to get penalised for yellow-flag infringements. The FIA said it would use red flags in double yellow situations after Hungary, but Perez was probably unwise to press on regardless.

He drove brilliantly in the race though, executing what was effectively a one-stop strategy after pitting under the safety car. Picked his battles and drove intelligently.

27 NICO HULKENBERG
Force India-Mercedes VJM09

Start: 8th
Finish: Retired
Strategy: (ultra-soft/retired)

Rating: 8

You have to feel sorry for Hulkenberg, who made what he felt was "probably my best getaway off the line this year" and was very unlucky to get pincered between the Toro Rossos while attempting to drive around Verstappen's slow-starting Red Bull.

He was fractionally the faster Force India driver in qualifying, but felt he should have been ahead of the Toro Rossos, so loses marks for ending up behind them.

20 KEVIN MAGNUSSEN
Renault RS16

Start: 15th
Finish: 10th
Strategy: 2 stops (ultra-soft/super-soft/super-soft)

Rating: 9

Just when he badly needed a big performance to underline his worth to Renault, Magnussen absolutely delivered. The first-lap chaos helped him into the points, but staying there was down to a fast and consistent drive, in which he expertly managed his tyres and beat several quicker cars.

Getting outqualified by Ericsson's Sauber was disappointing, but to finish within nine seconds of Kvyat's Toro Rosso was outstanding.

30 JOLYON PALMER
Renault RS16

Start: 18th
Finish: 15th
Strategy: 2 stops (super-soft/super-soft/soft)

Rating: 6

A tough weekend for Palmer, who felt a problem with his car's floor hindered him in final practice and therefore hurt preparations for qualifying.

Palmer then wheelspun away his chance to make Q2 at Turn 9. He lost out badly in the lap-one shenanigans, picked up a slow puncture and got stuck behind Ocon's Manor. Palmer eventually beat both Manors and Ericsson's Sauber, but it was still a disappointing race overall.

26 DANIIL KVYAT
Toro Rosso-Ferrari STR11

Start: 7th
Finish: 9th
Strategy: 2 stops (ultra-soft/super-soft/super-soft)

Rating: 7

Another solid performance from Kvyat, who got the added reward of championship points thanks to Toro Rosso's improved relative form here.

A bolshie defence against Verstappen was doubtless good for the ego, but arguably cost him the necessary time and tyre life to challenge Alonso's McLaren for a better result. He qualified behind Sainz again, but did a decent job given he had just a single run in Q3.

55 CARLOS SAINZ JR
Toro Rosso-Ferrari STR11

Start: 6th
Finish: 14th
Strategy: 3 stops (ultra-soft/super-soft/soft/ultra-soft)

Rating: 7

Nothing went right for Sainz in this race. He can't be blamed for tagging Hulkenberg at the start, while simply trying to drive around Verstappen's Red Bull, and the subsequent mandatory early stop to remove a damaged bargeboard dumped him into traffic.

Sainz felt points were still possible but for an MGU-K failure that left him well down on power. The bright spot is he excelled in qualifying again.

9 MARCUS ERICSSON
Sauber-Ferrari C35

Start: 14th
Finish: 17th
Strategy: 3 stops (ultra-soft/super-soft/ultra-soft/soft)

Rating: 6

Ericsson has struggled in qualifying recently, so was delighted to steal into Q2 amid Vettel's woes and top the Sauber/Renault/Manor brigade, after timely tyre pressure tweaks got the car working better.

He was right behind Magnussen's Renault after the first-lap nonsense shook out, but went backwards from there. The first stop came way too early, and he ultimately got stuck behind Wehrlein's Manor instead of fighting for a valuable point.

12 FELIPE NASR
Sauber-Ferrari C35

Start: 16th
Finish: 13th
Strategy: 2 stops (super-soft/super-soft/soft)

Rating: 7

Nasr was a chunk slower than Ericsson in qualifying, struggling with oversteer that hadn't presented itself in practice.

He lost out badly on the first lap as bedlam unfolded on his side of the grid, but recovered well, passing both Manors and even keeping Vettel at bay for a time. Nasr was always going to struggle to finish any higher up without the advantage of track position over quicker cars.

14 FERNANDO ALONSO
McLaren-Honda MP4-31

Start: 9th
Finish: 7th
Strategy: 2 stops (ultra-soft/super-soft/soft)

Rating: 9

Give Alonso a sniff of a decent result and he will inevitably deliver. He arguably should have made a slightly better job of qualifying, given he was only fractionally slower than Sainz on his first Q3 run then failed to improve on his second, but a typically strong start made up for that.

Alonso could do nothing about Vettel or the recovering Verstappen, but achieved the best possible result.

22 JENSON BUTTON
McLaren-Honda MP4-31

Start: 12th
Finish: Retired
Strategy: (ultra-soft/super-soft/ultra-soft/soft/retired)

Rating: 7

Tiny fractions often add up to a lot in Formula 1. Button was nowhere in practice, but was lapping within a tenth of Alonso in Q2 when he tagged the wall and broke a wheel.

He hit Bottas's Williams trying to avoid Hulkenberg after the start, which broke the McLaren's front wing, damaged the floor and brake ducts. Button soldiered on, but eventually retired for fear of brake failure.

31 ESTEBAN OCON
Manor-Mercedes MRT-05

Start: 21st
Finish: 18th
Strategy: 3 stops (ultra-soft/ultra-soft/super-soft/super-soft)

Rating: 5

Not a great weekend for Ocon, who had to learn Singapore and the ultra-soft tyre and qualified more than six tenths behind Wehrlein.

Ocon's race was ruined by two slow pitstops, the first of which cost over a minute. He matched Wehrlein in the middle of the race, but by then their strategies had diverged. Early on he was about half-a-second per lap down.

94 PASCAL WEHRLEIN
Manor-Mercedes MRT-05

Start: 19th
Finish: 16th
Strategy: 2 stops (ultra-soft/super-soft/ultra-soft)

Rating: 8

Manor brought aerodynamic updates to this race, but Wehrlein lost most of his to an unfortunate minor crash in final practice. It was therefore a good effort to outqualify Ocon by such a large margin on his Singapore debut.

He managed to beat Ericsson's Sauber too in the race, which included an impressive 24-lap final stint on ultra-softs. Wehrlein drove well, on a difficult weekend for Manor.

8 ROMAIN GROSJEAN
Haas-Ferrari VF-16

Start: DNS (20th)
Finish: N/A
Strategy: (DNS)

Rating: 4

An absolute nightmare weekend for Grosjean, who lost first practice to a leaky engine air intake, crashed in the second session, then again in qualifying while driving at "200% with brain switched off" trying to beat Gutierrez.

He had zero confidence in the car, struggling with the brakes and concerned the Haas upgrade was misbehaving. Brake failure en route to the grid put him out of his misery.

21 ESTEBAN GUTIERREZ
Haas-Ferrari VF-16

Start: 13th
Finish: 11th
Strategy: 2 stops (ultra-soft/ultra-soft/soft)

Rating: 7

Gutierrez deserves credit for putting together a clean weekend on his side of the Haas garage while his team-mate struggled, though he was less than two tenths up after their first Q2 runs, despite completing 41 more laps in practice.

He should have fought Magnussen for the final point, but lost too much time battling with Sainz and Perez in the middle of the race.
