Spengler leads Lausitz testing

If Friday's test sessions for round two of the DTM at EuroSpeedway Lausitz were anything to go by, Saturday's knockout qualifying session will be an intriguing proposition

Incessant rain during this morning's session meant that Friday afternoon's 90 minutes was crammed with both race and qualifying set-up work. Despite running an extra 10-kilos over Audi, thanks to Bernd Schneider's success in the opening round at Hockenheim, Mercedes topped the session with Bruno Spengler (1:17.628) and Schneider (1:17.788) annexing the first two places.

Former champion Mattias Ekstrom was Audi's best offering in third place, although his 1:17.960 lap was set a few minutes earlier than the Merc pair's last lap fliers on a track that was getting faster by the moment as new rubber was bolted on.

Alexandros Margaritis flew the flag for the 2005-spec cars, his Persson-run Merc lapping fourth fastest, just ahead of Jamie Green's '06-spec Merc. The latter, who started on pole in the season-opener, was on a long run at the end of the session, however, so don't rule him out for tomorrow.

Former Formula One stars Jean Alesi and Mika Hakkinen were next up for Merc, ahead of Audi's Martin Tomcyk, Tom Kristensen and Frank Stippler.
