Schneider tops Lausitz practice
DTM points leader Bernd Schneider set the pace in the hour-long free practice session before qualifying for the second round of the pan-European V8 touring car series at EuroSpeedway Lausitz on Saturday
Mercedes' four-time champion lapped the East German venue in 1:16.791 seconds in his Mercedes C-Klasse, and none of his rivals made it below the 1:17s barrier.
Heinz-Harald Frentzen was best of the rest for Audi, 0.227 seconds in arrears, with teammate Tom Kristensen right behind. Martin Tomczyk was fourth fastest in his Audi, with the top 2005-spec car once again the Mercedes of Alexandros Margaritis in fifth.
Former champion Mattias Ekstrom was sixth fastest, over half a second slower than Schneider. He needs to score heavily this weekend after his DNF in the opening round at Hockenheim, as does Merc ace Jamie Green.
Hockenheim pole sitter Green hit trouble once again, however, as the Audi of Vanina Ickx ploughed into the side of his Mercedes at the ADAC-Kurve on his out-lap on new tyres at the end of the session. His C-Klasse appeared to suffer suspension damage in the clash, giving his AMG team two hours in which to fix it.
