Marco Wittmann says winning DTM title in second year 'very special'

Marco Wittmann says winning the DTM title in just his second season in the series is something "very special"

The BMW driver wrapped up the 2014 title with two races to spare thanks to sixth place at the Lausitzring, in a race where the last two drivers capable of stopping him winning the championship, Mattias Ekstrom and Edoardo Mortara, both failed to score.

Following the race, the 24-year-old said he was finding it difficult to describe his emotions having won the title.

"It was a special moment when I crossed the finish line," he said.

"I think maybe I can describe the feeling tomorrow. It's something special, it's very emotional.

"To get into the DTM was always my dream, and then to achieve the title in my second year, it's for me something very special.

"It's still difficult to find the right words. There are the pictures in my head from the past years, from karting, from getting here, so it's something really great."

BMW's motorsport chief Jens Marquardt was full of praise for Wittmann following the title win.

"It is difficult to find words today to describe Marco Wittmann's performance," he said.

"That goes not only for today's race, but also the entire season. Marco fully deserves to be crowned champion so early in the season.

"Marco is the youngest German champion of all time, and hardly anyone has ever wrapped up the title so early in a season - and all in just his second year in the DTM. An absolutely mega achievement."

Despite the title fight already being over, Wittmann added that he is not worried about finding motivation to fight for wins at the remaining two rounds at Zandvoort and Hockenheim.

"We still have two targets, two aims that we want to achieve - the team and the manufacturer titles. That's what I'm pushing for now, so I'll try and get maximum points from the last two races.

"Of course it's always nice to go into the winter break with a nice result, so Zandvoort and Hockenheim I'll be pushing for a good result. Best case would be twice on the podium. It will be the same effort as before."
