Alesi grateful to Mercedes

Jean Alesi has thanked Mercedes after competing in his last DTM race at Hockenheim on Sunday

The Frenchman scored a point in his final race, which brought to an end his five-year spell in the series.

During that time, Alesi scored four victories, although things were more difficult for him this year as he was driving a year-old car for the first time.

"I would like to thank Mercedes for the opportunity they have given me to be part of the DTM during the past five years," said Alesi.

"This was a chapter of my career that I always will remember in a positive way. Even though I have stopped racing I will still consider myself to be part of the Mercedes family."

The former F1 driver also praised the DTM organisers for their approach to running the championship.

"The DTM and their approach to the public is one of a kind and its style is second to none, which I always liked and admired very much."

Alesi confirmed his intention to leave the series during the middle of this year, but he added that he intends to continues racing elsewhere.

Norbert Haug, vice president of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport added: "Jean was a vital part of our DTM campaigns for the last five years.

"It was very special to have a driver of Jean's calibre with such an impressive Formula One pedigree in our ranks, and he always brought excitement to the DTM.

"Jean will remain closely connected to the Mercedes brand, and we wish him all the best for his future."
