Robin Frijns tests Audi DTM car as part of young driver evaluation
Former Sauber F1 reserve driver Robin Frijns tested a DTM car this week for Audi as part of a young driver evaluation at Monteblanco
The 2012 Formula Renault 3.5 champion, who was a race winner in GP2 this year, was released by Sauber in September having only driven for the team in the young driver test at Silverstone.
Frijns, who was part of a similar test for Mercedes earlier this year, was one of eight drivers invited to test by Audi in what the manufacturer described as "an investment in the future".
"DTM is one of the best options available to any driver, so it was nice to be invited along," Frijns told AUTOSPORT.
"It's a big manufacturer, one of the biggest. It's always good to test with them and to put your name on the board so they know you.
"I don't know what the situation is for next year, I just showed up and did my best. I can't do more than that."
Audi DTM boss Dieter Gass said that the test, which featured two-time champion Timo Scheider and Adrien Tambay as baseline drivers, was an opportunity for the outfit to look at talent for the long-term future.
"We regard this talent-scouting as an investment in the future," said Gass.
"We're absolutely happy with our current driver line-up but would still like to give young talents an opportunity to take a peek behind the scenes of the DTM from time to time.
"This is how some of our current drivers got started as well and today they're part of the DTM or other series."
The test also featured Formula 3 racers Jordan King and Harry Tincknell, who earned the run as a result of being the highest-placed Volkswagen-powered drivers in this year's F3 European championship.
