Farfus wins first Oschersleben race

Augusto Farfus won an eventful first World Touring Car race at Oschersleben, in which all three of the main championship contenders failed to score

The BMW driver took advantage of a congested start to move into the lead into the first corner and never looked threatened, eventually crossing the line well clear of Chevrolet's Rob Huff.

Huff survived an early scare when teammate Nicola Larini was pitched into a spin after finding himself sandwiched between two SEATs at the start. The Italian hit Huff's passenger-side door and was forced to retire, but Huff was able to press on.

Alain Menu completed the podium for Chevrolet after passing Gabriele Tarquini early in the race, but Tarquini could have more pressing concerns after finding himself under investigation for his part in an incident involving title rival Andy Priaulx.

Tarquini had been falling backwards through the field with an apparent mechanical problem during the middle stage of the race when he was caught by Rickard Rydell and Priaulx. Rydell got past the SEAT safely but when Priaulx tried to do the same thing, he was tagged into a spin that left his BMW in the barriers and the world champion out of the race.

Tarquini went on to finish well down in the order along with SEAT's other main title hope Yvan Muller, who also struggled throughout the race.

Independents' Trophy honours went to Proteam BMW driver Stefano d'Aste, with class pole-sitter Pierre-Yves Corthals retiring due to accident damage.
