Project Brabham lining up investors for LMP2 WEC campaign in 2016

The ex-Formula 1 driver and 2009 Le Mans 24 Hours winner launched Project Brabham a year ago with the aim of reviving the name in international motorsport both as a team and, long-term, a potential constructor.

After a strong take-up of the crowdfunding scheme, raising close to £300,000, Brabham is now seeking the money both to put the team together and launch the ambitious digital portal that will give access to the team to investors and also act as an engineering education platform.

"We are now at the point where we are starting to talk to serious investors, which is great," Brabham told AUTOSPORT.

"It's been a while, but not rushing it has been really important. I'm trying to build something quite big here so it needs a solid foundation and that's what we've been doing behind the scenes.

"We've been getting some key people on board and with those people comes some great contacts to help us build on that."

Brabham admitted that time is short in order to get the team on the grid for the start of the 2016 WEC season at Silverstone on April 17.

He stressed that the priority is to ensure the team is ready to be successful rather than rushing the project.

"Brabham needs to come back in the world environment in terms of racing, and how we build the business around it is the thing that has been evolving as we go along," said Brabham.

"We are now pretty set on what that [business plan] is and that's why we are comfortable talking to investors.

"The target is still LMP2 in WEC in 2016.

"Obviously, the longer it goes the tighter it is to make the first race, but if we can enter the championship after the first couple of races then I can live with that as long as it is done properly.

"I don't want to rush it. I've been around long enough to know that if you go into a season half-cocked, you never recover.


"I want to take my time, do the testing and get the team to the point where we feel we can go there and do a good job."
