Ecurie Ecosse moves to European Le Mans Series as it eyes Le Mans
The revived Ecurie Ecosse squad is switching European championships in its bid to return to the Le Mans 24 Hours after an absence of nearly 30 years
The Barwell-run Ecosse team has opted to compete in the GTC class of the European Le Mans Series rather than in the Blancpain Endurance Series with its new 2013-specification BMW Z4 GT3.
The move has been inspired by the prize of a guaranteed 2014 Le Mans entry for winning the ELMS GTC class for GT3 machinery.
Team boss boss Hugh McCaig, who was behind Ecosse's previous return to Le Mans in the 1980s in the Group C2 class, said: "This is a very exciting development for Ecurie Ecosse. Ultimately we want to be back at Le Mans and this is a fantastic step in the right direction."
Ex-Formula Renault UK race winner Ollie Millroy, who last year raced with Ecosse in the BES and the British GT Championship, will lead the team's line-up in the ELMS.
The remaining two seats in the BMW will be shared by Andrew Smith, Joe Twyman and Alasdair McCaig over the course of the five-race season.
Ecosse's new BMW was given a shakedown at Silverstone on Monday.
Ecosse, which won the Le Mans with Jaguar in 1956 and '57 (pictured), returned to international sportscar racing in 1984 and continued at Le Mans and the world sportscar championship until '87.
The team was re-formed for an attack on the Spa 24 Hours in 2011 before full campaigns in the BES and Britain with a BMW last year.
Ecosse will also continue in British GTs with a BMW driven by Oliver Bryant and Marco Attard after finishing fifth in the points with McCaig last year. A second car will be entered under the 'Ecurie Ecosse with Barwell Motorsport' banner.
