Winterbottom tops final practice

Ford's title outsider Mark Winterbottom set the pace as free practice concluded for this weekend's Gold Coast 600 in Surfers Paradise

Winterbottom edged out the similar Falcon of Paul Dumbrell by 0.1 seconds, recording the best lap of the weekend so far of 1m12.3486s in the fourth and final session.

Points leader James Courtney was third fastest in his Falcon, just ahead of Garth Tander in the top Holden. It was a mighty close session, with a second covering the top 19 cars!

IndyCar runner-up Will Power ended the day as the top invitee. He headed the third session with a best time of 1m13.4205s in his FPR Falcon. Sebastian Bourdais was the next best international newcomer, taking fourth in the session. But his hopes will not have been helped by team-mate Jonathon Webb putting their Falcon in the tyres in the final session.

Ryan Briscoe took fifth in the third session in his HRT Commodore, while Andy Priaulx (888 Holden) was just fractions behind in sixth.

After being forced to sit out the second session, Scott Pruett finally hit the track in his Holden, but unsurprisingly struggled to set a competitive time.
