Whincup wins race two at the Island
Team Vodafone's Jamie Whincup took victory in race two of the L&H 500 at Phillip Island, securing pole position for himself and teammate Craig Lowndes in tomorrow's 500 km race
Whincup led from start-to-finish despite a vigorous battle at the start of lap one, which saw Whincup, James Courtney and Will Davison running side-by-side into turn one, Davison and Whincup continuing side-by-side before Whincup took the lead at Honda hairpin.
Whincup went on to take comfortable win, easing up near the end, crossing the line just ahead of Davison who was over ten seconds ahead of his nearest rival.
That was James Courtney, who spent the second-half of the race fending off and defending against Russell Ingall, Ingall just not quite able to make a successful move on Courtney, despite a couple of side-by-side runs through the kink into Honda hairpin.
Their tussle allowed Courtney's teammate Shane van Gisbergen to close right on to Ingall's tail on the final lap, but he also was unable to make a move.
It looked like Steven Richards would have filled that place (or possible even higher), but contact between him and Jason Richards on lap 12 leading to Steven spinning dropped him down the order to ninth.
He wasn't the only frontrunner to have a worse finish than expected. With the team getting the compulsory pitstop out the way in race one, Garth Tander was set to fight for a place on the podium. But he ran off the track at Honda hairpin on lap one, ending his podium hopes, recovering to finish seventh.
