Whincup takes pole in Adelaide

Team Vodafone's Jamie Whincup continued his strong practice form by taking pole position for race one of the Clipsal 500 in the Adelaide Parklands

Whincup took pole with the fastest-ever V8 Supercar lap of the circuit, despite a last-minute effort by Jeld-Wen Motorsport's James Courtney, Courtney missing out on pole by just over a hundredth of a second.

Behind Courtney was Mark Winterbottom for Ford Performance Racing, reigning series champion Garth Tander in his new ride at Toll Holden Racing Team, Jim Beam Racing's Will Davison and the second Team Vodafone car of Craig Lowndes.

Valvoline Cummins driver Lee Holdsworth, Jim Beam's Steven Johnson and the second FPR car of Steven Richards filled the next three places.

Autobarn Racing's Paul Dumbrell got off to a good start for his new team, completing the top ten, but unable to take part in the final leg of qualifying due to damage incurred late in leg two.

Some of the surprises to miss the top ten runoff sat just outside the top ten in eleventh through to fourteenth; Todd Kelly, Rick Kelly, Shane van Gisbergen in his debut for Stone Brothers Racing and Mark Skaife who struggled like last year to find speed in Clipsal qualifying.

Russell Ingall's debut for Supercheap Auto Racing and his first drive in a Holden since 2002 saw him qualify eighteenth fastest, eight places and over a second faster than teammate Paul Morris.
