Whincup takes maiden pole

Team Vodafone's Jamie Whincup has taken his first V8 Supercar pole position after setting the fastest time in qualifying for this weekend's racing at Queensland Raceway

Whincup put his car on top of the times with four minutes remaining and never looked under serious threat from that point on, ending the session nearly one and a half tenths faster than fellow front row starter, Mark Skaife from the Holden Racing Team.

Garth Tander continued his strong qualifying performances with third on the grid, just over a quarter of a second slower than Whincup, with James Courtney alongside him hoping to put some more points on the board after problems have prevented finishes in recent races.

The third row is filled by a pair of Fords, Mark Winterbottom for Ford Performance Racing just ahead of Craig Lowndes, the teammate of the pole man, Lowndes sneaking into the top ten as the chequered flag fell in the second session of qualifying.

Eighth and tenth is not where the Kelly brothers usually start, championship leader Rick in eighth, and Todd in tenth making the top ten as he has at every round so far this season (along with Tander).

Steven Richards just missed the top ten and will start twelfth, while Jason Bright and Greg Murphy didn't even make it through the first session of qualifying and will start 25th and 26th respectively.
