Whincup takes dominant Surfers pole
Team Vodafone's Jamie Whincup took a dominant pole position in qualifying for this weekend's Coffee Club V8 Supercar Challenge on the streets of Surfers Paradise
A gearbox niggle wasn't enough to stop Whincup from lapping the circuit nearly six and a half tenths faster than his nearest rival, Holden Racing Team's Garth Tander, in the final leg of qualifying, with Autobarn's Paul Dumbrell a surprise third.
Just over a second behind pole were Mark Winterbottom and Whincup's teammate Craig Lowndes, who also had a struggle with a less-than-perfect car, although it was of his own making, after clipping the wall in the second leg of qualifying.
Russell Ingall, Will Davison, Todd Kelly, Rick Kelly (racing this weekend in a spare car after his regular car was heavily damaged in practice at Bathurst) and James Courtney completed the top ten.
Just outside the top ten in eleventh was Ford Performance Racing's Steven Richards, who was knocked out of the top ten in the dying seconds by his own teammate Winterbottom.
Mark Skaife qualified sixteenth after scraping through the first leg of qualifying in 20th, while Steven Johnson will start from nineteenth despite being fifth-fastest in the opening leg of qualifying.
Jack Perkins is seventeenth on the grid in the second Jack Daniel's car and back in V8 Supercar after its former driver, Shane Price, was let go by the team during the week.
